1.30Can you install a garbage disposal in a sink that doesn't have one?
Q.I live in an older apartment building. Assuming the permission of my landlord, would it be possible to install a garbage disposal in the sink if there isn't one already? We do have a dishwasher, and the kitchen area looks pretty new. The bathroom plumbing, however, is original 1940s, so I'm not sure exactly what my limitations are. Any help would be appreciated.
A.The size of the drain is very important. If the plumbing is really old it may not fit
Most newer sinks can have a disposal hooked to them. You also need to think about where your going to pull the electric from and where the switch will go. I would be surprised if the landlord will let you do all this.
1.30Installing a new kitchen sink. The drain opening and garbage disposal drain collar don't match.?
Q.The drain opening in the new sink is 5", but the collar for the garbage disposal is 4-1/2". Because the drain opening is sloped, I don't think I will be abale to seal the drain, even with the plumber's putty. Are any sort of adapters available? It is a kitchenaid garbage disposal and a Kohler sink.
A.If you can't figure out a good solution go back where you bought your sink and ask questions. A standard disposal should be able to fit. With a sloped drain opening your plumbing might be interesting underneath.
1.20Does having a garbage disposal eliminate a plumber?
Q.I want to buy a single kitchen sink bowl cause right now i have a double bowl sink w/ a garbage disposal but I dont use it at all but my husband says its stupid to get rid of it since everyone wants a garbage disposal and it eliminates having to call a plumber since it will not clog up, is that true?
A.No ma'am. In fact, a garbage disposal is just one more thing to break down. But they are handy for grinding food scraps that otherwise would have gone into the trash. The best place for those are outside in a compost pile. But yes, a disposal can clog too.
1.20What do I do to get a bottle cap out of my garbage disposal?
Q.A beer bottle cap fell into my garbage disposal yesterday and is rattling around. I can't afford a plumber, what do I do?
This would be a good time to mention that I'm not comfortable sticking my hand in. . .after seeing a horror movie where a garbage disposal ground a character's hand down to a nub.
A.You could also look under the sink and un-plug the disposal, just a thought. After that, reach in and get the bottle cap. Of course if you're still queasy about that, try a magnet, BBQ tongs, 2 spoons.
1.00Slow draining by garbage disposal?
Q.The side if the sink by the garbage disposal is draining slow. Will it ruin my garbage disposal unit if i put some Drano into that side of the sink? the house is only 5 years old, and i have tried putting egg shells, small bones, and ice down it to break it loose. That was reccomended by a garbage disposal repairman, but it didn't work. any suggestions would be great. Also I really don't feel like taking it all apart, or hiring a plumber. thanks
there is nothing wrong with the disposal unit. the sink on that side is draining slow.
A.Sorry, but you are either going to have to take it appart or call someone to do it.
1.00Exactly what tools are needed to install a garbage disposal?
Q.I have never installed a garbage disposal, the plumber said it would take him about 20 minutes to do it, so i figure with my in experience it might take me 2 hrs. what exact tools will i need to do this job? I think i may need some large adjustable pliers. or channell locks which i will have to go purchase.
A.Rather than read all the replies, just type in, "How to Install a Garbage Disposal" and you'll get several tutorials to follow and even a video or two.
1.00Garbage disposal?
Q.Is it hard to install a new garbage disposal? plumber wanted to charge me over $100.00 to install? it is apparently frozen up, house was vacant for over a year
A.NOPE ...JUST UNHOOK POWER DISCONNECT PIPE AND THEN UNHOOK DISPOSAL AND INSTALL REVERSE ORDER 15 MINUTE PROJECT....FIRST TRY A DISPOSAL WRENCH OR ALLEN WRENCH ON THE BOTTOM OF THE DISPOSAL FIRST UNPLUG POWER CORD THEN TRY TO TURN DISPOSAL MAKE TAKE SOME FORCE WORK SOME WATER IN THERE
1.00My garbage disposal blows eveything back up into the ajoined sink when I first turn it on. How can I fix it?
Q.The drain appears to work fine. It just seems that when I first turn on the garbage disposal it sends a gyser up through the other sink drain. I have checked to see that the plumbing is done right as well, though I don't see any problems there.
A.The drain needs cleaning and you can do it without removing any piping. Heat up some water and carefully pour it down the drain without the disposal after you have also poured down 1 cup of white vinegar and 1/2 cup of baking soda. Link us @ Homelinepros.com.

Garbage Disposal Plumbing
A garbage disposal can offer several years of service with proper maintenance and care. Reduce the need for garbage disposal repairs by following these few simple steps. Never stuff the disposal more than its capacity. Avoid pouring grease, and shoving metal, glass or bones down the unit. While the unit is in motion, pour cold water down the unit -- hot water can melt grease, which can later harden to clog the unit. Never pour drain cleaners or household bleach down the unit, and run water through the unit before and after every use. If you do put something in your unit that doesn't belong there, use a pair of tongs to remove the object, not your hands. To keep foul food smells out the unit, cut up a few pieces of lemon rind and grind them into the unit. To clean your kitchen garbage disposal, run some ice cubes mixed with rock salt for about 5 seconds in your garbage disposer.
For simple garbage disposal repairs, first look for the source of the problem. For instance, if the unit doesn't run, look for the reset button, and press. If this doesn't work, make sure that your unit is receiving power. If your unit runs intermittently, there may be a problem with the garbage disposal switch or stopper. Replace these, and it should fix the garbage disposer. If you notice a garbage disposal leak, locate the source, or simply tighten the connection. If the garbage disposal makes a lot of noise, you may have shoved something that shouldn't have been there. Check for this, and if you don't find anything, get the blade, motor or impeller replaced by a garbage disposal plumber.
Installing a garbage disposal is a simple task, but does require more than basic plumbing and electrical skills. First, remove the waste trap and sink strainer, and install the sink flange and mounting ring. Tighten the triangular mounting ring using the three screws, and then connect the power cord. Mount the disposal by aligning with the three mounting ears of the mounting assembly. Finally, connect drain lines, and lock the unit in place.
